Why Should an Optometrist Fit Contact Lenses?

Just like glasses, contact lenses only perform optimally when they are precisely fitted to the eyes. Subjective comfort alone doesn’t reliably indicate how well a lens is truly tolerated. Additionally, glasses and contact lens prescriptions differ due to the varying distance from the eye. For clear, comfortable vision, it’s essential to have your contact lenses fitted by a professional. They will also guide you through the different types of lenses available, such as:

  • Soft lenses that adapt to the eye for enhanced comfort
  • Daily lenses, which are disposed of after one use
  • Weekly lenses, suitable for up to a week of wear
  • Bi-weekly lenses
  • Monthly lenses
  • 3-month lenses
  • 6-month lenses
  • Extended wear lenses, which can be worn continuously for 30 days

Choosing the wrong lenses can irritate the eyes or even lead to infections. Professionally fitted lenses, on the other hand, provide a perfect fit, superior comfort, and optimal tolerance.

Who Fits Contact Lenses?

In cases of medical eye conditions, an optometrist is the primary contact for lens fitting. The optometrist will first assess the overall health of your eyes and determine whether they’re suitable for contact lenses. If the eyes are healthy, opticians may also perform fittings. Specialists in contact lenses can be found through professional optometry associations.

Generally, the optometrist performs the lens fitting, using their expertise and routine to ensure a reliable and professional fitting for healthy eyes.

What to Expect During a Contact Lens Fitting

At Zeker Zicht, your contact lens fitting takes place over two appointments. The first visit, or intake, lasts around 15 minutes. It includes a consultation, an eye analysis, and lens selection based on the eye exam and a questionnaire. The second visit, known as the lens training session, takes about 30 minutes. During this time, you will learn how to insert, remove, and care for your lenses, followed by a final check-up to assess lens strength and fit.

Intake Appointment

  1. Consultation
The optometrist will ask about your contact lens expectations—how often and how long you’ll wear them, and which vision issues need correction. Before the appointment, you’ll receive a questionnaire to help assess your visual needs.

  2. Eye Analysis
After the consultation, a thorough eye exam will be conducted, focusing on:

    • Nearsightedness or farsightedness
    • Corneal curvature
    • Corneal radius
    • Eye curvature
    • Tear production
    • Eye sensitivity
  3. Lens Selection
Based on the eye analysis, expectations, and visual needs, a suitable lens will be recommended. Trial lenses will be ordered and fitted during the second appointment.

Lens Training Appointment

  1. Lens Fitting and Instruction
During this appointment, you’ll practice inserting and removing the lenses, learning several methods for doing so safely and effectively. Once you’re comfortable, the optometrist will provide instructions on lens care, hygiene, and proper handling.

After an adjustment period, the optometrist will evaluate the lenses for:

    • Visual clarity
    • Comfort
    • Movement
    • Positioning

Upon completing the fitting, you’ll receive a prescription, enabling you to reorder lenses anytime. You will also be given a cleaning solution and lens case.
